RUGBY UNION
Lymm cruise to victory over rivals
Lymm Rugby Club 39-6 Winnington Park
by James Parr
A DEPLETED Lymm Rugby Club showed their strength in depth as they managed to defeat local rivals Winnington Park by a hefty margin.
Lymm failed to make a strong start as handling errors and a lack of cohesion suggested victory might not be a foregone conclusion.
Sloppy lineout play and basic errors appeared to be hampering Lymm's progress until Chris Kinsey managed to manoeuvre his way over the line to give the game it's first score.
Without their usual kicker, Lymm missed a tough conversion to add the extras and were pulled back by the visitors after they were awarded a penalty due to careless Lymm play.
Further penalties and missed tackles allowed Winnington to take a 5-6 lead before Johnston restored the home side's advantage after converting a penalty shortly before half time.
An inspired half time introduction of Welsh wizard Glen George made an immediate impact as he tore through the visitor's defence and won a penalty for the Lymm side.
Sustained pressure from Lymm enabled ex-skipper Mark Sutton to cross the white wash and make the score 13-6.
Some slick play from Brady and Andy Roberts enabled Dave Roberts to score under the sticks and allow an easy conversion for Johnston.
Lymm were now making some solid plays and their pressure told when good work from Cox allowed George to cross the line to give the home side a 25-6 lead.
The home side were in danger of running riot when rugby union new comer Quarmby crossed the line after another brilliant break from Brady.
To add insult to injury, Lymm were awarded a penalty try following four consecutive Winnington Park penalties on their own line.
The game ended in a drubbing for the visitors as the home side ran out 39-6 winners. Next up for Lymm is a trip to Broughton Park on November 10.

Lymm Golf Club takes
part in the Italian Job

by Gary Skentelbery
A party of fifteen Lymm golfers went to Italy to take part in an International Tournament to mark the club's centenary,
along with celebrating the centenaries of other clubs taking part.
Peviously Lymm set up the "Society of 1907 Golf Clubs", and the tournament was a direct spin-off from this.
Lymm Golf Club Centenary Chairman, John Goodier said, "The response to the society has been amazing. A total of forty
clubs joined, including one from Italy and one from the Philippines."
The Italian club - Menaggio and Cadenabbia Golf Club, decided to arrange the tournament as a celebration of the 1907
clubs, and Lymm was fortunate to be invited, along with golf clubs from Colchester, Yeovil, Burhill and Walsall
in England, in addition to clubs from Germany, France and Ireland. The whole event was sponsored most generously
by Rolex and took place over three days. The food, accommodation and hospitality were all first class from
beginning to end, and the competition was played in a friendly yet competitive spirit.
The village of Menaggio is in a picturesque setting on the shores of Lake Como, and the golf club is in an elevated
valley some five hundred feet above the lake. The course is rated as difficult. This, and the hilly terrain
tested both the abilities and fitness of all concerned, but each evening everyone was treated to Italian
cuisine in the clubhouse, and the day's exertions seemed to evaporate - maybe it was something to do with the
"vino rosso"!
Although Lymm GC did not win (that prize went to the host club), but it was by no means disgraced.
Each club exchanged gifts with the host club and many other mementoes were exchanged between individuals and clubs.
Finally everyone came away with a splendid presentation bag from Rolex containing a souvenir book of Menaggio's
centenary, a Rolex shower-proof golf jacket, a Rolex polo shirt and logo golf ball.
All of the Lymm contingent, mainly couples, extended the three days to a week at their own expense and came back
with very pleasant memories of a splendid and historic occasion. The events celebrating the Centenary of Lymm Golf
Club are now nearing their end, but it has been a fantastic year. Club Captain, Mr John Dixon, and Lady Captain,
Mrs Lesley Peak have done a great job in steering the club through the various events that were arranged, and
it was fitting that they and their spouses were all able to help celebrate the event in Italy.

Celebrating 100 years of golf
by Gary Skentelbery
Celebrations to mark the centenary of Lymm Golf Club got into swing when the Centenary Bridge on the 1st Tee
was officially opened by Club Captain John Dixon and Lesley Peak Lady Captain.
This was followed by the Captain's Drive In, which signified the start of John's year in office.
An estiamted one hundred members turned up to mark event.
The Club will also took the opportunity to launch the Centenary Book entitled "LYMM GOLF CLUB" A History of the
First 100 Years, written by club member, retired Head Teacher Mr.John Goodier with assistance from past and
present members.
The book details the many changes and improvements which have occurred to the course and clubhouse over the years,
including the original construction of the course within the the old meander of the River Mersey, isolatd by the
cutting of the Manchester Ship Canal.
Many Course improvements have been made for the Centenary Year, including construction of the Centenary Bridge.
During a year of celebrations there will be a number of other events starting with the official opening of the
renovated clubhouse, followed later in the year by the Summer Centenary Ball, an Edwardian Golf Day and many matches
against other golf clubs.
One very successful project started by Lymm was to set up a "Society of 2007 Centenary Golf Clubs" which has attracted
over 30 members, including one from the Phillipines and one from Italy.
The rules allow members to play free of charge at other clubs and this is already proving very popular and successful.
